2019 Latina of Influence | Attorney Veronica Lizeth Canton
Hispanic Lifestyle is pleased to recognize Corporate Litigation Attorney Veronica Lizeth Canton as a 2019 Latina of Influence. Ms. Canton along with our entire list of 2019 Latinas of Influence are invited to participate in Latina Conference 2019 taking place April 10 and 11, 2019 in Ontario, California.
Veronica is nominated for her commitment to increasing diversity in the legal field by sharing her experiences (positive and negative) with numerous mentees ranging from an 8th-grade student interested in studying law, pre-law students, law school students, associates, and in-house counsel throughout the U.S. She helps her mentees assess their strengths, challenges, and opportunities through one-on-one calls, meetings, and coffee-chats. In addition, her volunteer work with the Hispanic Bar Association and the American Bar Association focuses on increasing visibility for other Hispanic professionals in litigation, intellectual property and legal tech. Further, her work with Impowerus, Inc. seeks to improve the way underage minors receive pro bono work bridging the gap of law and technology.
Veronica’s story is one of triumph, having achieved what immigrants strive for: a better life, opportunities for education and success, and to be a good citizen devoted to helping her community. Veronica was separated from her mother at the age of three after her mother was forced to flee due to the civil war in El Salvador. Veronica was reunited with her mother in San Francisco at the age of nine. After working 14 years in the legal field, she decided to go to law school, graduating from Notre Dame Law School (NDLS) in May of 2018.
During her law school tenure, Veronica represented NDLS at the International Trademark Association’s conference in Barcelona presenting research regarding the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. She was an Extern for the ACLU, was a Judicial Extern at the Illinois Appellate Court and Northern District of Illinois, and was the National President of the Hispanic National Bar Association’s Law Student Division.
During law school, she became part of a student startup company, Impowerus, Inc. https://impowerus.com/ The legal tech company seeks to improve the way attorneys connect legal services with technology by improving the way attorneys provide pro bono legal services to undocumented minors.
In her current role as a corporate litigation attorney at Michael Best & Friedrich LLP, she represents clients in a wide variety of matters in state and federal court. Veronica is also an active member of the firm’s Blockchain, Digital Currencies & Smart Contracts team, works on various patent infringement litigation and labor and employment litigation matters. In addition, she is an Editor for Landslide® Magazine, a publication of the ABA Section of Intellectual Property Law; Co-Chair for the ABA’s Women in IP Communications Committee; Chair of the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Section and Deputy General Counsel of the Hispanic National Bar Association.
In all that Veronica does, her goal is to serve as a positive example for others. Her law school experience has turned into the book, The Latino Law School Blueprint, sharing a blueprint for those seeking a great law school experience. Her challenge-fueled and solution-driven mindset are now an inspiration that anything is possible with hard work and determination.
