Sonia Smith Kang | 2023 Latina of Influence
We are pleased to announce that Sonia Smith Kang, AfroLatina Founder & Designer of Mixed Up Clothing, has been selected as a Hispanic Lifestyle 2023 Latina of Influence. Ms. Smith Kang will be recognized for her leadership in our community during Hispanic Lifestyle’s Latina Conference 2023 to be held on November 9, 2023 at Wilson Creek Winery, Temecula, California.
Sonia Smith Kang is a multicultural advocate who draws from her diverse cultural heritage as an Afro-Latina. A proud military brat born on Puerto Rico, then stationed on the Hawaiian island of O’ahu, Sonia has dedicated her life to amplifying the voices of the BIPOC community.
A critical care Registered Nurse turned designer, Sonia is the founder of Mixed Up Clothing, a children’s apparel brand designed through a multicultural lens. Now sold at large retailers Macy’s and Belk, Sonia and her designs have been featured on the Today show, The Real, NPR, Medium and Latina Magazine. A multiracial activist and community leader, Sonia serves as Vice-president of Multiracial Americans of Southern California, a 501c3 advocating for the multicultural community.
Today Sonia calls Los Angeles home where she is married to her Korean husband and mom to 4 multicultural, multiracial and multilingual children. Co-founder of “Mixed Heritage Day”, Sonia was recognized for her community work by L.A. Mayor Garcetti during the inaugural event held at Dodger Stadium. Sonia’s experiences lends itself to consulting, writing and speaking on various panels as an expert in the multicultural, multiracial field and has led several discussions on talking to children about race & identity.
