Family • Vision • Impact

Some businesses begin with a business plan.

Others begin with family.

For brothers Luis Salazar, Mauricio Salazar, and Gabriel Salazar, the journey that would become Paleta Planeta started during one of the most uncertain periods in recent history. What began as an idea during the COVID-19 pandemic—selling handcrafted paletas from their parents’ garage—has grown into one of downtown San José’s most recognized entrepreneurial success stories.

Today, Paleta Planeta stands as a testament to perseverance, family values, and the power of community.

Paleta Planeta will be recognized during  our HL | Milestone Series – Silicon Valley event, taking place on June 17, 2026. This invitation-only reception brings together a curated audience of executives, entrepreneurs, and community leaders for an evening of connection, conversation, and recognition.

👉 Event details & RSVP: https://bit.ly/41B5Z3J

The Salazar brothers, all products of the San José educational community, built their business on a foundation that reflects the experiences of many first-generation entrepreneurs. Mauricio attended Evergreen Valley College, where he also played soccer. Gabriel graduated from Evergreen Valley College before earning a degree in Finance from San José State University and becoming a Certified Public Accountant. Luis attended both San José City College and Evergreen Valley College before completing his degree in Health Science at Cal State East Bay.

Their educational journey reflects a commitment to personal growth that would later become instrumental in building a successful business.

Inspired by family members with deep roots in the paleta tradition of Tocumbo, Michoacán widely recognized as the birthplace of the modern paleta the brothers embraced an opportunity to learn the craft while creating something uniquely their own. Armed with knowledge, determination, and support from family members who believed in their vision, they launched Paleta Planeta in 2021.

There was no storefront.

No large investment.

No guarantee of success.

Only three brothers working together with a shared belief that they would build something meaningful for their community.

Selling through social media, community events, and neighborhood gatherings, they steadily grew their following one customer at a time. Their commitment to quality, creativity, and customer experience transformed a small family operation into a destination that continues to attract visitors from throughout Silicon Valley.

A defining milestone came on September 21, 2024, when Paleta Planeta opened its first brick-and-mortar location in downtown San José, directly across from City Hall.

For the Salazar family, the opening represented far more than a new business address.

It represented years of sacrifice, countless hours of work, and the realization of a dream that began in a garage.

Today, Paleta Planeta offers more than handcrafted paletas. It creates experiences, celebrates culture, and brings people together through flavors that honor tradition while encouraging discovery and creativity.

Milestone Moments

• Built a family-owned business from a garage operation during the COVID-19 pandemic

• Leveraged the educational opportunities provided by Evergreen Valley College, San José City College, San José State University, and Cal State East Bay

• Grew from direct-to-consumer sales and community events into a recognized Silicon Valley brand

• Opened its first storefront in downtown San José in September 2024

• Created a destination that celebrates culture, entrepreneurship, family, and community

• Demonstrated how education, family support, and determination can transform an idea into a thriving business

The Salazar brothers’ story reminds us that entrepreneurship is often about more than building a company. It is about creating opportunities, honoring family sacrifices, and investing in the communities that helped shape our journey.

Their journey from garage to storefront, from vision to reality serves as an inspiring reminder that some of the most meaningful milestones begin with family, faith, and the courage to take the first step.

35 Years of Opportunity: The Mexican American Bar Foundation Continues to Shape the Future of the Legal Profession

35 Years of Opportunity: The Mexican American Bar Foundation Continues to Shape the Future of the Legal Profession

Behind every scholarship is a story of determination, sacrifice, and the pursuit of opportunity.

One of the most inspiring parts of attending the Mexican American Bar Foundation’s 35th Annual Scholarship & Awards Gala was not the ballroom, the awards, or even the distinguished guests in attendance.

It was the students.

Throughout the evening, I had the opportunity to speak with scholarship recipients and law students whose stories reflected the very purpose of the Foundation’s work. Many were the first in their families to attend college. Others were the first to pursue graduate school. Several were first-generation law students working to overcome financial barriers while pursuing careers dedicated to service, advocacy, and justice.

As the father of one attorney and hopeful that another future lawyer may one day join our family, these stories resonate deeply with me. They remind me that educational opportunity does more than change individual lives—it changes families, communities, and future generations.

Last weekend, I had the privilege of providing production support for the Mexican American Bar Foundation’s 35th Annual Scholarship & Awards Gala in Downtown Los Angeles. While my role was behind the camera, I once again witnessed the extraordinary impact this organization continues to have on aspiring legal professionals.

Founded in 1991, the Mexican American Bar Foundation was established to support students pursuing legal careers through scholarships, mentorship, and educational opportunities. For thirty-five years, the organization has remained committed to expanding access to the legal profession while helping develop the next generation of attorneys, judges, advocates, and civic leaders.

The Foundation’s mission is simple yet powerful: to create opportunities for students who may otherwise face barriers to entering the legal profession.

For many of the scholarship recipients recognized during the evening, that support can be life-changing.

Thirty-Five Years of Impact

Over the past three and a half decades, the Mexican American Bar Foundation has awarded hundreds of scholarships and distributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to deserving students pursuing legal careers.

Like many nonprofit organizations focused on education and community advancement, the Foundation has faced challenges in recent years. Changes in the fundraising landscape and economic uncertainty have affected organizations across the country.

Yet despite these challenges, the Foundation continues to move forward with purpose, determination, and an unwavering commitment to investing in future generations.

That commitment was evident throughout the evening.

A Community of Legal Leaders

The gala brought together an impressive cross-section of the legal profession, including judges, attorneys, corporate counsel, law firm partners, public servants, and community leaders.

Attendees represented a broad range of legal specialties, from immigration and family law to corporate law, business litigation, public policy, and community advocacy.

In addition to presenting scholarships, the Foundation recognized individuals whose leadership and service have created lasting impact within the legal profession and throughout the broader community.

This year’s honorees included:

  • Community Impact Award – Dr. Ciriaco “Cid” Pinedo
Recognized for his commitment to advancing educational opportunity, leadership development, and community engagement. Dr. Pinedo’s work continues to inspire future generations while strengthening the institutions that serve our communities.
  • Trailblazer Award – Xavier A. Gutierrez
Honored for breaking barriers and creating new pathways of opportunity through his leadership and professional accomplishments. His career serves as a reminder of the importance of representation at the highest levels of business and public life.
  • Precursor de Justicia Award – Humberto Guizar
Recognized for his longstanding commitment to justice, advocacy, and service. His legal career reflects the values of leadership, perseverance, and community responsibility that the Foundation seeks to instill in future attorneys.

The recognition of these leaders serves as an important reminder to scholarship recipients that success in the legal profession is not measured solely by career accomplishments, but by the positive impact one leaves on others and on the communities they serve.

Why Representation Matters

While Latinos make up nearly one-fifth of the United States population, representation within the legal profession continues to lag behind.

According to recent national legal industry data:

  • Latinos represent approximately 19% of the U.S. population.
  • Latino attorneys account for only about 6% of practicing lawyers nationwide.
  • Latino representation among law firm partners remains significantly lower.
  • First-generation college and professional students continue to face financial and structural barriers to entering the legal profession.

Organizations such as the Mexican American Bar Foundation help bridge those gaps by providing scholarships, mentorship, networking opportunities, and access to professional role models.

The result is a stronger legal profession that better reflects the communities it serves.

Fashion, Celebration, and Community

Of course, no gala would be complete without a little style.

Fashion was certainly on display throughout the evening as guests gathered to celebrate scholarship recipients, honorees, and the Foundation’s 35-year legacy. The event was filled with elegance, energy, and a shared sense of pride in the accomplishments of both the students and the legal professionals who continue to support them.

I am proud to share a collection of exclusive photographs from the evening that capture both the celebration and the people behind this important mission.

Investing in the Future

As the Mexican American Bar Foundation celebrates thirty-five years of impact, its work is far from finished.

The Foundation continues to raise funds to support future scholarships and educational programs that will help aspiring attorneys achieve their goals.

If you have children considering a career in law, know a student pursuing legal studies, or simply believe in creating greater opportunity through education, I encourage you to learn more about the Foundation and support its mission.

Because when we invest in students, we invest in our future.

When we help create pathways to education, we strengthen our communities.

And when we ensure that a wide range of voices and experiences are represented within the legal profession, we all benefit.

Yet the most meaningful measure of success may be found beyond the company’s growth and accolades.

Throughout his career, Javier has remained committed to helping others gain access to opportunities in technology, engineering, artificial intelligence, and STEM-related fields. Through mentorship, educational partnerships, board service, and support of nonprofit organizations, he has worked to help bridge the gap between education and career pathways for students and emerging professionals.

His commitment reflects a belief that innovation should not be limited to a select few. It should create opportunities for future generations to learn, lead, and succeed.

That commitment to expanding opportunity represents perhaps the most important milestone of all.

Today, OSI Engineering stands as an example of what can be achieved when entrepreneurial success is matched by a dedication to community impact. Through innovation, leadership, and service, the company continues to help shape the future of Silicon Valley while investing in the next generation of innovators and leaders.
